…spoiled by an idiotic audience. Well, that’s not quite true - the main lecture was pretty funny, and gave a bit more insight on the guy’s life & experience beyond the substantial story told in Terry Zwigoff’s “Crumb.” The following Q&A, however, was a total mess - incredibly banal, useless questions like “What does Zap mean?” or “What is your son’s name?”; to a particularly strange most-likely former Haight&Ashbury resident hollering bizarre statements from the balcony, culminating in a confused audience leaving at the end with him still on stage. Still…an inspirational night :)
Been a while since I posted…so what’s new? I started my new job at WB a little over a month ago, and it’s been a crazy few weeks getting settled in, but thankfully I’m gettin the hang of things. I’m working on a new comic short story as well called Rings which is getting better and better the more I work on it. Also, I’m teaching myself music theory (awesome) and finally showing my guitar the love it desperately deserves. More soon!
This is a bit belated, but this was done for my dad’s Father’s Day 09 card in commemoration of our upcoming fishing trip. My dad was born and raised most of his life in American Samoa where I’m also from, so fishing exists as far back in his bloodline as you could imagine. By that, I mean, this picture is no exaggeration…8-I
I’m not too up on my anime these days, not as much as I used to anyway, but I lately discovered this film through the blog Two Brothers and a Sister. In my opinion, I found this to be a very sweet and entertaining story. High school romances and dramas are certainly something of a cliche in anime, but The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is actually a moderately straightforward morality tale about power and responsibility set within what I consider to be a very believable romantic comedy.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this film was how well treated the characters were. I loved each character in the film, major and minor, and really cared about and sought to learn more about their complicated relationships in the 98 minutes I was given. Along with the great artistic symbolism taken in some of the film’s boarding, and some of the best acting (animated) I’ve seen in an anime, there’s no reason you shouldn’t see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time!
This past Saturday was Gallery Nucleus’ “Jab, Strong, Fierce” opening, the Street Fighter themed show featuring the work of several prolific illustrators from around the country. Overall, it was a PACKED! Big crowds of art lovers and game lovers were there to show their appreciation for this great franchise.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, however, I chose to participate in the in-gallery Street Fighter IV tournament…before realizing how many of the state’s top players decided to show up (Ed Ma, Combofiend, & more, yikes). Now-legendary Street Fighter II player, and Capcom employee, Seth Killian even hosted the tournament.
Along with my meager practice during that busy week, I took a trip with some friends to Knott’s Berry Farm on 6 hours of sleep, got vertigo on Boomerang, and came home briefly to a 30 minute nap (I was hoping for 2 hours). After the long wait to play using an XBOX 360 controller which I’ve used only once, I eventually…lost.
Despite the results of the evening, it was a great show, and a thrill to participate and show my love for Street Fighter. My thanks go out to Miguel, Anthony, Todd, Kazu, Amy and most of all my wonderful girlfriend Stephanie for their support! She also caught the entire battle on film:
